Arctic convoys hero makes leap of his life

A VETERAN of the Second World War Arctic convoys has become one of the country’s oldest skydivers.
And not only that, 93-year-old Syd Thompson has also managed to raise £700 for a cause close to his heart.
The adventurous war hero jumped 15,000ft from an aircraft at Dunkeswell Airfield near Honiton to raise money for the Dartmouth Hospital League of Friends.
The professional skydiver who jumped with Syd said he was ‘one of the oldest men on record to ever have undertaken the challenge’ and was amazed at his agility and calmness.
Retired postman Syd, who celebrated his 93rd birthday on September 3, is delighted to have completed the challenge. He managed to raise £700 through sponsorship for the hospital where his wife Eunice spent her last days nine years ago.
Syd, who lives in Faulkner Close, Dartmouth, said of the challenge: ‘It is something that I really wanted to do and I’m so pleased to have raised so much.’
