Dartmouth’s floral tribute marks Britannia anniversary

A floral display modelled on HMS Britannia has been given pride of place in Dartmouth’s Royal Avenue Gardens to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Britannia Royal Naval College.
The display was fork-lifted into place last Friday, under the watchful eye of South Hams District Council’s gardeners and Commander Jason Phillips from Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.
The wooden hulk of the original HMS Britannia was towed into the River Dart in1863 to be used for the training of new naval officers. The town has hosted officer training ever since with the current shore-based college being completed in1905.
