Academy link extends choice

NEW learning opportunities are being offered to sixth form students.
A range of A-levels and other courses are now being provided for post 16 students both at Dartmouth Academy and at its partner school, Kingsbridge Community College.
The new linked learning is part of the new multi-academy trust, Academies South West.
An academy spokesman said: ‘This is a new partnership and one that is developing with the clear aim of providing the best opportunities for all the learners in our communities, while offering a wider range of courses locally for all our students.’
Dartmouth Academy opened its own sixth form in September 2011 and the school has maintained a small but bespoke range of GCSE and A-level courses which continues next year with the provision of the Level 2 NVQ in child care being added to the curriculum, running alongside Level 3 BTEC in sports science.
In September, students in Year 13 currently in the sixth form will finish their courses at Dartmouth, while students in Year 12 will have the opportunity to study subjects either at Dartmouth or Kingsbridge.
It is hoped that by partnering up with Kingsbridge, students will be able to choose sixth form courses that wouldn’t run at Dartmouth and Kingsbridge students can choose sixth form courses that they wouldn’t be able to study at their own community college.
The spokesman said: ‘The past two months have seen all our students receive individual and personalised guidance about their choices for sixth form, employment and college.
‘The quality of this has been exceptional this year and has been a model of how the staff here and at Kingsbridge, working together, are able to support our students better than before.
‘This has taken place in conjunction with our careers programme, which has supported our students in their decision making for post-16 progression for September and included a careers day, progression assemblies, a visit to Kingsbridge Community College for an open day, a personalised progression meeting and a transition morning at KCC.
‘This is change, but change with the intent of improving the opportunities for the young people served by Dartmouth Academy as a part of Academies South West.’
