Boat capsizes and sinks in Dartmouth Estuary

A FRENCH fishing vessel capsized and sank after seeking shelter in Dartmouth harbour late on Wednesday night.
Dart Harbour Master Rob Giles said a multi agency response was put together to try and save the vessel, St Christophe I, but to no avail.
All five of the crew, all French nationals, are safe and unhurt.
A safety boom has been rigged around the vessel which lies on her starboard side on the sea bed next to her berth at South Embankment.
Capt Giles said the vessel had a considerable amount of diesel fuel on board – between 10 – 15,000 litres – and the most the most pressing concern now was removing fuel from the boat.
She has also become a hazard to navigation and Capt Giles said DHNA was working to have the vessel removed as soon as possible in partnership with the owners and their insurers.
He said the causes of the capsize and sinking were unknown and an investigation would be held into the matter.
